Create28 Week 3
"christy," "Create 28," "Deena," "joy," "Katie," "Leslie," "Shaunacey," "style," "style challenge," "summer"
We are only one week away from the end of our Create28 series and we've been having so much fun! We hope that you have been playing along and enjoying yourself as well!
If you are new to this style challenge, we have brainstormed daily prompts for you to use to create 28 new-to-you outfits this month! Think of the prompts as little bursts of inspiration to look at your closet in a different way!
Each day of the month, one Blended Blog contributor will showcase her interpretation of the daily prompt. We are hoping that you will visit each blogger and that you will play along, too! You can use our hashtag (#theblendedblogstyle) all week on Instagram and then you can come link-up here on Wednesdays! Here are this week's awesome looks!
On Thursday of last week, Katie from The Mishaps and Mayhem of a Solitary Life shared her Sunglasses Style with us! She has several super-cute pairs and posed the question, "Do you buy fancy, pricey shades or are you more of an inexpensive sunglasses kind of a girl?"
Deena of Shoes to Shiraz is the epitome of a Ballpark Babe! She showed us what she wears and brings to her kids' games and she created a stylish outfit to support her team. Go Jays!
Shaunacey from Simply Shaunacey talked about her Easy On the Go Style. As a busy mom, Shaunacey has to wear something comfy but she manages to look oh-so-cute, too! Nothing beats a pair of shorts and a detailed top for easy summer style.
Joy of Quilty Joy Joy talked us through her struggles with finding the perfect Chambray Shirt. She chose to feature a fun one with a little Western flare!
Leslie from Once Upon a Time & Happily Ever After nailed her Pinned It and Did It look! She walked us through her process, created fun collages and showed us her final product!
And our last look of the week is from Christy of RSquared. Christy showed us how to wear Mustard Mania during the summer months and even combined the color with the summer off-the-shoulder trend!
I hope you are having fun seeing The Blended Bloggers interpret our style prompts! Tomorrow it's Lisa's turn to wear Lovely Lace! And here are the rest of the prompts for this week:
Make sure to link-up your Create28 looks below and on Instagram (#theblendedblogstyle)!
Today we'd like to share with you some behind the scene info on two of our contributors: Shaunacey from simplyshaunacey.com and Whitney from whitneyalamode.blogspot.com
1. Who are some of your favourite bloggers and can you explain why they are your favourites?

Other than the lovely ladies of The Blended Blog? I love Fran of Franish because she truly seems to understand how to find clothes that fit a real body and I love her classic style. I also enjoy reading Writes Like a Girl by Nicole for her fun, colorful style and personality!
2. What is your greatest achievement outside of blogging?
The kids are on the list but I feel like I always say something kid-related so I'm going to go with getting my Master's degree while working full-time. It was a crazy 18 months.
My greatest achievement is having lived in Bordeaux, France for a year. When I moved there, I had never before seen the city and didn't know a soul there. It was scary but turned into one of the most fun and rewarding experiences of my life. I miss la vie en France!
3. How do you want to improve yourself in the next year?
This could get long, lol. I really want to do some work on figuring out some long-term goals. I would like to do a little soul-searching and figure out what my dreams are and how to make them come to fruition (or at least move in that direction).
Since I just turned thirty, I've been reflecting a lot about this lately. Not to sound to philosophical, but I would like to find the path in life that brings me the most peace and happiness. I feel like I may have fallen off that path in recent years and it's time to find it again!
4. If you could change the name of your blog, what would it be?
Well I JUST changed the name of my blog not that long ago sooooo I think I'll leave well enough alone (otherwise I might have to change everything all over again and ain't nobody got time for 'dat)
I love the name of my blog and wouldn't want to change it at all!
5. If you had 5 hours to devote to blogging a day, what would you work on?
Figuring out what happened to my children. Lol. Right this minute 5 hours sounds like a long time but we all know how quickly that would fly. If I had 5 solid hours, I would endeavour to turn the wifi OFF and just write. Sit down and just work on all the ideas I've been floating around but that still sit somewhere muddled in the back of my overburdened brain.
Hmm, good question! I would spend more time putting creative outfits together, driving around to find fun backgrounds and the right lighting, and having big photoshoots! I would also spend more time commenting on other blogs because I love building those blogging relationships!
6. What is your biggest challenge in blogging?
It's soooooooooo much work. I feel like no matter how much time you devote to it you can never be on top of things.
My biggest challenge most definitely is finding the time and another person to help take my pictures.
7. How would you describe your personal style and is there a person who is a fashion inspiration to you?
My personal style is simply style. I like to keep my outfits easy and fairly low-maintenance for the most part but I LOVE to dress up!! lol
I've been pondering how to describe my style for a little while now. Here is what I've come up with: classically feminine with a touch of whimsy. Do you think that fits? And I don't think I have one person in particular who inspires my style. I draw inspiration from all over the place!
Thank you ladies for participating, see you back next month when we interview 3 other contributors.
Hi friends, Shaunacey here (I know, long-time see - don't worry, you'll be sick of me in a few weeks) I'm so excited to share this blogger with you because she has quickly become one of my favs. Aimee of MamaCentric is a beautiful lady inside and out and she speaks to my soul through her writing. I think I have cried (good tears) reading more of her posts than I do watching PS I Love You (if you've seen the movie, you know A LOT of tears are involved). I have also been fortunate enough to create a friendship with Aimee and she is every bit as sweet and thoughtful as her writing suggests. So, meet Aimee, I trust you'll love her as much as I do!!
Don't forget to visit her on Facebook and show her some love :)
What is your favorite style season (fall, spring, summer, winter) and why?
Shaunacey is a regular contributor to The Blended Blog. Quasi-stylish mom, wife and writer. She can be found at her blog Simply Shaunacey, on Instagram or on her back patio clutching for dear life to her coffee (or wine).
Don't forget to visit her on Facebook and show her some love :)
Other than blogging, what do you do for a living (profession)?
I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past four years. While it isn't a profession, I do spend quite a bit of my day home schooling my two older children. Some might say that I am also a professional baby-wearer, middle of the night crafter, and world-class procrastinator. I am pouring my heart into becoming a full-fledged, freelance writer. Check back in a year and perhaps I can add this to my credentials.
What is your greatest unfulfilled ambition?
My greatest unfulfilled ambition is to write and publish an anthology of essays....and then tour the world as I host conferences for women of all ages and backgrounds to get together in big, inspiring group-hugs and affirm how beautiful and capable each of us truly are.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
resilient. passionate. grateful.
What is something that people might be surprised to know about you?
Most people are surprised when they learn that I had cancer as a teenager. Thankfully, after a few surgeries I returned to a healthy, happy life. When my peers in school asked why I had such a large scar running from my cheek to neck, I humored myself by making up stories ranging from knife-wielding gang fight to tiger attack.
What inspired you to start blogging?
The moment after I had my daughter, I sat in the quiet of our hospital room listening to the bustle of the nurses outside of the door and gazing deeply into my baby girl's eyes. She was so alert, engaged, alive. It felt as though she was looking deep into my soul. Though I had been a mother for six years to her two older brothers, this moment I shared with her was profound. Right then, I knew that I had to be more. I was ignited with urgency. I had to do all of the things I had been to scared to do for years. If I was ever going to teach her what it meant to seize the world, I was going to have to dig deep and seize all of the longings within my heart. And all I have ever longed to do is write. Ever since I was a girl scribbling poetry in my room at night, I have longed to tell my stories. So, when my daughter was just four weeks old, and I was thoroughly exhausted, I created my blog and jumped in head first. No plans. No goals. No real idea of what I was doing. Just following the calling to fulfill my dreams, and hoping that my words might inspire others to chase their joy.
What is your favorite style season (fall, spring, summer, winter) and why?
Fall! Though I live in down in Texas where our fall isn't crisp air and changing leaves, I do appreciate the slight drop in temperature as an opportunity to pull out my beloved cardigans and layer pieces. Also, pumpkin bread. Although, that has nothing to do with fashion.
What is the last book you read and would you recommend it?
The last book I read in its entirety was Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. (I am notorious for starting books and not finishing them for months. There are bookmarked, dog-eared books stacked in little piles all about my home. I could say the same for my many projects, crafts, and essays...) Anyhow, yes, I would absolutely recommend this book! If you are feeling stagnated in your creative endeavors, or if you are seeking affirmation that the art you produce adds value to the world, this is the read for you.
Shaunacey again - now that you're all captivated by Aimee's writing here are two posts by Aimee that I KNOW you'll love:
Chasing Your Joy
Enjoy and thank you Aimee because truthfully, I forgot I had a Feature Friday coming up and Aimee was generous enough to do this VERY last minute! I owe you!!!

Spring Fever - ways to indulge yourself this Spring
"self-care," "Shaunacey," "Spring Fever," "ways to indulge spring"Hey Lovelies, this Spring post is harder to write than I'd like to admit. Why? Because we're still stuck in a winter wonderland over here. Seriously, as I write this there is still snow on the ground... in April. Anyways, I'm going to ignore the snow and frigid temps and share with you some ways to embrace Spring while indulging in a little self-care (I'm a big advocate of self-care and if you're looking a BIG list of self-care activities I wrote a pretty long one HERE). ENJOY and get out there and indulge yourself, You deserve it!
Go for a walk/hike - get outside and breathe in the fresh air. If you're like me, you've been cooped up all winter and are suffering from a mild case of cabin fever. Don't wait until it's super warm and sunny, get out now. Children are optional.
Change up your hair - Spring is all about the 'new' so it's naturally the perfect time for a new 'do (ya, I'm rhymed, just a little Spring poetry for ya). Need some inspiration? Check out Sarah's Hair Challenge. FYI Nicole is a regular participant and has shown some great styles too!
Do yoga outside - there are all kinds of places offering outdoor sessions OR you could throw your mat down in your backyard and get your down-dog on!
Add some color to your wardrobe - embrace the rainbow and get some fun and colorful clothing on! Black and grey are a thing of the past and there are so many fresh colors out there to choose from. Don't worry, if you need some inspiration just check back to our Bright Pants post.
Go for a drive on a sunny day with the windows rolled down and the music blasting - if you've got kids you may want to leave them with someone and enjoy this as a solo venture unless you like listening to "Let it Go" on repeat, if so, then giv'er.
Cook/bake something you've never made before - better yet, get cooking on the BBQ!!! There are so many fun spring-y meal ideas out there, do a quick Google search and get crackin'! Our very own Deena has been cooking her way through her favorite cookbook and inspiring all of us to get trying something new in the kitchen!!
Get a pedicure - is there a better way to embrace the warmer weather than by some pampering and pretty toes? I think not!
Buy/pick yourself flowers - even if the weather hasn't got the Spring-memo yet (like here) you can bring a little Spring inside. Having fresh flowers around the house just makes me happier. EVEN if I have to buy them for myself.
Whatever it is that makes you feel as though you're embracing Spring and indulging yourself, get out and DO IT!!! I'll be here waiting for it to stop snowing.
Shaunacey is a regular contributor for the Blended Blog and you can also find her on her blog, Confessions of a Frumpy Mommy. Her 2 young children keep her occupied but she always finds time for the important things, like enjoying the snuggles and a good glass of wine.
Style Perspectives - bright pants
"bright pants," "fashion," "Shaunacey," "spring style," "style," "Style Perspectives"14 bloggers each picked a look that defined their personal style.
The featured blogger on the Blended Blog showcases her signature style (the prompt for that day) and then the other bloggers (on their personal blogs) show how they interpret it.
AND all you awesome linker-uppers... Introducing our top two visited links:
We had a tie for first place with the Blended Blog's very own Nicole and Katie
Katie, our resident cutie and wine connoisseur (though, there might be a few of us with the wine status lol) is looking lovely in a gorgeous blouse
Nicole was the bright spot on a snowy day for all our readers!! How pretty are these colors on her? Hot momma!
The second most clicked pic:
The ever stylish Shelly rocking a beautiful geometric pattern blouse!
Make sure you linkup at the bottom of this post for your chance to be featured!!!
Okay, now down to business... let's get colorful!
Bright Pants:
Prior to about 2 years ago the only color of pants I would wear were: blue (denim only, not actually blue pants) and black.
You would never find me wearing white (that's still touch and go with the littles) or any other color on my lower half. Then, on a whim, I bought a pair of orange (yes, you read that right) capri pants. They were on sale (score) and fit like a dream... my love affair of colored pants began and the rest is history.
I'm here to help you see the
Pants with some color are a great way to add some some variety and fun to your wardrobe.
Colorful pants can be a little bit of a challenge to style, especially for us somewhat style-challenged folk. Obviously neutral pairings are a good choice (black, white, denim etc).
But, that's not the only way.
Try pairing them with other brights!
I mean, why wouldn't you want to look like a giant bag of Skittles? Taste the rainbow? I say wear it!
But, that's not the only way.

AM I RIGHT?!
Too much?
Sure, you may need to avert your eyes for a second, adjust the brightness on your screen or find your sunglasses quickly, but seriously, try looking at this outfit and not feeling a little bit happier. Okay, maybe that's because you think I resemble a clown, but clowns make people happy, no? Well, I suppose not if you're one of those people who are afraid of clowns. Now that I think about it, they are quite creepy. Too late, pictures taken. Flowers, I remind you of bright spring flowers. Better? Whew. Sorry about that.
I feel kinda like I'm walking on sunshine in this. It makes me happy. It's like a Spring day. Okay... maybe a little overboard, but you get it. When I'm seriously rocking my mombie status, wearing something like this makes the day a little bit easier, a little bit more cheery and I'm always down for that.
So the next time you wake up on a dreary day, throw on a pair of bright pants and a coordinating bright top! You won't regret it. At the very least, you might make someone else's day a little brighter (literally) and that's cool too.
Ready for some bright pants overload?? Here's how I've worn bright pants (pre-during and post pregnancy too!)
Are you already a bright pants lover? Yes - linkup your bright pants posts below!
If not, have I convinced you to give them a go?

Do you have any children? What parenting advice would you give to a someone having a new baby?
We have three wonderful teenage sons. While I miss the baby days, I won't lie, your life does become easier the older they get. However, the worries do grow. Yet, with your life becoming more manageable, I think it's a super great trade off. Just the fact that they become more self-sufficient is an exhilarating feeling. Knowing that, you get through the worries with grace and optimism.
What is your greatest unfulfilled ambition?
I wish I would have continued on with graduate schooling. My unfulfilled ambition was to be a college Professor of Sociology. I'm a lifelong learner and even incorporate knowledge tests into the goals of the team that works for me. Yet, my job is not fulfilling and my degree is not being utilized. If I had to do it all over again, I'd finish that graduate schooling and teach the minds of college students.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Compassionate, Giving, Motivator
What hobbies do you have other than blogging?
Working out, Cooking, Baking, Scrapbooking, snowshoeing, reading and helping others.
What inspired you to start blogging?
I actually wrote a whole post on this last year called How Blogging Saved My Life. http://
Something was missing. As happy as my life was, there was an ache in my heart. While pondering this ache, I would start to think about all the blogs I was a fan of and how their fun spin on life, love and style made a difference in my life. That's it...I wanted to make a difference, make someone smile, feel better or laugh and with the last name of Nine it only made sense to call the Blog "Living On Cloud Nine." Fellow bloggers have now become like family. Supporting and encouraging one another and understanding that if you're taking the time to write a blog post, then your heart is truly special!
What is your style “uniform”?
This varies from season to season but in the Winter, leggings and boots are a staple. If you don't already know, I am a HUGE fan of ponchos and wraps and the ease of throwing one over a simple canvas is comfortable yet classy at the same time. I've featured many of them on the Blog and always say I'm not buying anymore so how another one ended up in my closet is beyond me, lol. Warmer weather means little dresses and sandals with a jean jacket or cardi in the cool evenings. And of course I adore scarves all year long. Here is a post of one of my favorite outfits including the popular "blanket scarf." http:// livingoncloudandreanine. blogspot.com/2015/11/the- scarf-of-season.html
What is your ideal date night?
It's actually a date day that carries over into the night. We love to take a whole day, especially in the Summer. We start with a trip to a local winery or brewery, listen to music there and grab some beverages and lunch, then head to a local festival of some sort, then a roof top dinner topped off with catching a glorious sunset on a bench on the beach. Then we hold hands on the drive home, singing to the music with the windows rolled down. Gee, now I wish it was Summer again. Here I blogged about one if our day dates called The Perfect Day http:// livingoncloudandreanine. blogspot.com/2015/08/the- perfect-day.html
The Look of Love: relationship tips for parents with young children
"Look of Love," "parenting," "relationship tips for parents with young children," "Shaunacey"
"they" (whoever 'they' are) say that the hardest time in a relationship is the first few years after your children are born. Since we're in the thick of it right now, I'd tend to agree (although, who knows what the future holds).
Our first is turning 3 in April and our second is almost 7 months old. Life has changed so much since they were born, It's beautiful and crazy and busy and tiring and awesome. Those two sweet littles take up the VAST majority of our time and energy. BUT we're still married. We're still two people who met, fell in love and share this crazy life together.
We're just in the midst of trying to figure out hot to negotiate our relationship now that it's not just us and there's so much other 'stuff' to focus on.
The advice I'm about to give is not from an expert who's on the other side, but from someone who's right there in the midst of it all. My "tips" are things that we've found helpful and/or are striving for.
Schedule time - like anything, if you don't schedule it, it's easy to forget about and push down the list of priorities. Schedule together time - write it in your planner (yes, I still use a planner), put an alarm in your phone, put a sticky on the fridge or a circle on the wall calendar. Wherever you keep track of life's upcoming events, make sure 'couple time' is scheduled on there.
What we do: we've decided that we're going to spend one evening a week, after the kids are in bed, doing something that doesn't involve technology. Cooking/baking, doing a crossword puzzle, playing cards etc.
Do little things - it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of taking care of children, putting their needs first, cleaning, making food blah blah blah. When you're in the middle of a sleep regression or a brutal bout of teething, there literally might not be time together without a child. This is the time where little things are so important (though, I'd argue, their important all of the time). Has your partner been up all night with the baby? Have a cup of coffee ready and waiting.
What we do: I always pick up 'treats' for Brent when I grocery shop. It's small and simple but it shows him I was thinking about him when I was out. I love when Brent texts me from work asking how my day is going. Regardless of my answer, I know he was at work and took a moment to think about me and check-in.
Have time by yourself - this sounds counter-intuitive but remember the old saying 'you can't take care of anyone else unless you take care of yourself'. This is true of your relationship as well. It's easy to give yourself when you're feeling somewhat rested/less stressed. Bonus points for encouraging each other's self-care time.
What we do: we both try and support each other in taking the time we need to 'refresh'. This sometimes just means saying "go take a shower by yourself" or agreeing to parent so the other person can go hangout with a friend OR, if your my husband, agreeing to let your wife go to Vegas with her blogging friends (yes, he's getting big points for that one!).
Go on dates - get out of the house WITHOUT children!!! It doesn't need to be fancy or costly, but it needs to be a change of scenery. This can be tricky with really young children and for people who don't have a lot of support, but if you can swing it, DO IT! It's like a reset button gets pressed when you get away together for a little bit.
What we do: truthfully, we JUST went on our first date in 7 months. We got the kids to bed, had nana come over, got dressed up and went out to a nice dinner. I can't even tell you how amazing it was. Warning: once you go once, you're going to want to go regularly!
Touch each other regularly - with energy levels often at an all time low, the last thing on your mind a lot of the time is intimacy. I'm not telling you that you need to be having s-e-x on the daily but that doesn't mean you should stick to a hands-off policy. Quite the opposite, when you're exhausted and sex is the last thing on your mind, it's even more important to maintain some kind of physical intimacy. Hold hands, kiss, hug, put a hand on your partners knee while you watch tv. It's easy and helps maintain a connection.
What we do: Brent always kisses me before he leaves in the morning. The few times he forgot as he rushed out the door, I received a call a few minutes later saying "I forgot to kiss you goodbye" (or I called him saying 'you forget something?').
There you have it... now, off to schedule some time with my man :)

Potato, Leek and Bacon Soup
8-10 potatoes
3 leeks
6 cups chicken broth
1/2 pound of bacon
1.5 cups of whole milk
1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1.5 cups water (optional)
Directions:
- Peel and cut potatoes. In a large stockpot, bring potatoes and broth to a boil. Continue to cook until potatoes are tender.
- Cup up bacon (I use scissors and cut in 1 inch strips) and place in deep drying pan on medium heat. Cook until evenly brown. Remove bacon but leave grease in pan.
- Clean and cut leeks. **leeks are notorious for being full of dirt - watch this video for a how-to for leek-prep**
- Saute the leeks in the frying pan with the reserved bacon grease (for 8-10 min on medium heat).
- Once potatoes are tender, stir in fried leeks, milk and bacon. Turn off heat and let soup begin to cool. Stir in shredded cheese (I wait until the soup has been cooling for about 15 min, so the cheese doesn't break down).
- Decision time: if you like chunky soup, use a potato masher until soup is desired consistency. If you like creamy soup, grab a hand blender and puree away! NOTE: I found the soup SUPER thick at this point so I added 1.5 cups of water while pureeing (this is optional but it didn't impact the flavor in the slightest).
- ENJOY!!
if you want to be real fancy-like, you can top with left over chopped leeks (I forgot to save any), shredded cheese, bacon (which I also forgot to save for picture-taking purposes) and a dollop of sour cream. YUM!!
I should add - this dish was toddler approved!!! :)
